University Radio Station

JAM

"Jam Radio" is the Universities radio station. It goes live 7 days a week in the student union building and on the internet . There are a variety of shows, run by the students and it is a great way to gain some useful work experience if that’s the field you want to go into. Its £10 to join the society, however, with this one off payment you also get trained on how to use all the equipment. http://www.hullstudent.com/jam

Bars

The student Union is made up of three bars:

Sanctuary which is open all day everyday , supplying cooked food , drink , darts and pool tables.

The John McCarthy Bar is open on Wednesday nights when the Athletics Unions have there socials and on Saturdays when
“Brassick” takes over with £1.50 drinks all night.

The Asylum night club which is home to all major bands and club nights the university has to offer. This year Pendulum and
Zane Lowe will be playing in the Fresher week.

Major Functions

There are two main club nights of the week. Twisted is Saturday's groovy 70s, 80s, 90s, chart and cheese night, which has also been extended to Friday.

Most nights cost around £2.00, except when live acts appear, when the prices can rise to around £6.00. In the past bands such as Toploader, the Bluetones and Embrace have performed.

Friday and Saturday night are always popular, while during the rest of the week students tend to socialise in Hull, where there are several student nights. Good nights include Wednesday at the Fez and Monday at the Waterfront. On campus, smaller ents do occur, like quiz night and the comedy network.

On Wednesdays most sports players head for John McCarthy's then on to Tower nightclub.

The Best Nights Out

As mentioned above there are two main club nights in the union with Brassick on Saturday and the Athletics unions night on Wednesday.
Brassick costs £1.50 to enter and on .A.U night it is £3.00 . However prices will go up when live bands play
.In the past bands such as Toploader, the Bluetones, Feeder, Athlete and Embrace have performed.

Of course, these are not the only nights out with Mondays being one of the biggest nights of the week at Sugar.
Sugar is a club in the heart of the city and on Mondays it become a student only night which attracts all years. It is £3.50 to get in before 11 and £4.50 after that , drinks are at reasonable prices.
Sugar consists of three floors with the first being for cheese. The second floor is for indie music and sometimes a live band and the top floor is usually supplying the R&B music for the night.
Sugar will become your Monday night must, but don’t be afraid to try others such as Code and Spider which are mainly active on Friday and Saturdays.

No matter what any night of the week you can find something to do , and remember , its never dull in Hull.

Societies

There are hundreds of clubs and societies at Hull, and only the most boring of students would be unable to find one they like. From the Cocktail Society to SHAGS, the Scouts and Guides Society (how they got the acronym, I don't know!) there is a great variety of enjoyable extra-curricular activities.

Social Events

There are several big social events throughout the year. Rag (charity), The Law Society Ball and The Rugby Union Man Auction are some. The highlight however is the AU ball. This is not just open to athletes however tickets are limited and every year student Que overnight to make sure they get hold of one. The event takes place within the University grounds and attracts big names such as ,Kate Nash, Feeder and Athlete. This year a casino , jazz band and fair ground were also introduced. Evening wear is essential. However, many local stores offer student discount, if you don't want to buy.

The Lawns: Three miles from campus and home to over 1500 students , The Lawns is the place to be in your first year , you can choose from self catered to semi catered, on suit or shared showers. It’s a great place to get to know people and to enjoy your first year.

Thwaite- Thwaite Hall is a lot fancier then The Lawns and has a reputation for being a little boring . However having been there a few times I can say that this is not true . Yes it is nicer and very recently renovated, but you will still meet great people and have a great time. Thwaite is fully catered with breakfast and dinner; it is also the most expensive hall.

Needler- Viewed by some as less than desirable, with the worst facilities and years of neglect , many student feel hard done by living there. On the upside its very close to the village of Cottingham and with a pub and a 24 hour garage across the road , you can easily break away.

General accommodation

In the second and final years most students live in private rented accommodation, which is fairly easy to find as there are more properties than students.

Landlords have taken to enticing students with free Plasma TV’s along with the cheapest rent in the UK. The most popular places are around Beverley Road and Newland Avenue, but try to avoid the council estates of Bransholme and Orchard Park.

The two most reliable companies I have found are UNICOM and Accommodation Warehouse. These are the two dominate letting agents so you can play them off each other.

Local area

Kingston-upon-Hull (aka Hull) is Britain's 3rd largest port and is situated on the Humber estuary, into which the River Hull flows. The surrounding coastline is spectacular, but remains quite grey throughout the year.

The University is situated two miles from the city centre in a leafy residential area, but the campus itself is ruined somewhat by the aray of 1930s and 1960s architecture. It seems that most of the campus is made up of ugly, grey brick structures. Hunt a bit though and there are some very attractive redbrick buildings. Whatever the case though there is plenty of grass and trees to look at.

The mix of campus life in a city is great, since students can easily escape to the anonymity of the city centre if they wish. Hull has numerous pubs, but we recommend the Gardner's Arms, a real studenty place, the Foxhill and Firkin, and Scruffy Murphy's. A popular pub crawl is the Bev Road Run, which few finish without making a mess. If you are looking for something which is away from the city centre and closer to the uni then go for the Haworth.

Hull's selection of nightclubs is pretty crap, but The Room is defintiely worth a look. It's on 3 or 4 floors with different rooms with sofas and bars dotted around. Music depends on the night but there's a bit of everything. Eclipse is only worth a visit in times of great need. It's cheesy but doesn't have the atmsophere that makes some cheesy clubs a laugh. Goths might like to try Spiders in the middle of an industrial estate. it has proper industrial cages and a fine selection of homemade cocktails that are dirt cheap. Remember to pack that black lippy and slayer T-shirt then. As for live gigs, there is a lot more variety. Keep a look out for posters in the Student Union and also keep a look out for the newest club in town, complete with rooftop beer garden. Hull's biggest advantage - £1.40 a pint in more than a few places.

Parking

Undergraduate students are not allowed to park on campus during the day, and in order to park on campus at night there is a fee of £6.00 for a permit. It is best to take your bike.

Special arrangements can be made for disabled students or students with other special needs.

Banking

There are NatWest and HSBC cash machines on campus.

Disabled facilities

Learning difficulties and sight/hearing impairments are well covered. In recent years the University has taken drastic steps to improve its disabled access and this has really shown with most buildings having ramps and lifts.

University shops

There is a union mini-mart, travel agency and photocopy centre. These are all decribed as good and have a wide range of essential items.

Bookshops

There is a branch of Waterstone's on the first floor of the Student Union building. They try to have all the course set texts in stock, but there are often delays.

Sporting facilities

There is a Sports and Fitness Centre with indoor sports facilities, weight training, 2 multigyms, a sauna and solarium and a jacuzzi. The Sport Centre, which is run by the Union, contains various gyms and indoor sports facilities and an all-weather pitch.

In addition there are 11 acres of sports fields and 11 tennis courts. Virtually all sports are catered for, and for £4.50 per annum students can use all the facilities during the day for free. Recreational and competitve sport is run by the Athletic Union, a body that exists at several, but not all universities. The range of clubs is good. We were told to look out for the Ski and Snowboard Club in particular.

Transport policy

Public transport in the city is cheap and frequent...just what you need to get back home for the lunch time soaps!

There is no late night minibus service, but the university has an arrangement with a local bus company to run a service until 2:30am Thursday - Saturday. If you don't fancy that then there are always plenty of taxis.

Green Spaces

The campus has a fair amount of greenery, but it is spoilt a bit by the 60s architecture. Hull is surrounded by miles of flat land.

Libraries

The Brynmor Jones Library is the main university library with just under 1 million books. From the top floor windows there are spectacular views of the Humber Estuary - which are great for staring out of when seeking inspiration! Seriously though it is light and airy and good for working in, the staff are described as helpful.

Computing facilities

The computer centre is where most of the universities computers are. There are over 1000 machines on campus, as well as several departmental computers. Overall the equipment could do with an upgrade, but it works. Just don't expect to get a computer when there is a rush of deadlines! Hull offer a service where you can have your own machine connected to the college network. This is available in all halls rooms and all university-owned houses and is subject to a small fee.

Student Welfare

The University and Student Union run an good welfare service with councellors, a health centre and a range of experts giving advice on legal / financial matters. There is also a creche, but places are limited.
