Campus publications

A basic newsletter that tells you everything you need to know. There's also an unofficial prospectus which is worth taking a look at. Although it's honest it is written by people who are totally pro-Oriel so bear that in mind when assessing its objectivity.

Future Plans

Two new halls opening October 2000.

Famous Alumni

Sir Walter Raleigh - Let the queen walk on his coat.
Cecil Rhodes - Imperialist and key player in De Beers

Bars

There's a chilled bar with all the usual games and stuff. Oriel is pretty sporty so clubs and societies get drunk and rowdy. This is good if you like drunken rowdiness. On the whole the bar is not the best of the colleges in the evenings but there are worse. One positive aspect is that it is the place where everyone meets whether they are drinking or not.

Major Functions

Cocktail parties, jazz nights and cabaret every so often in classic Oxford style. Otherwise there are three organised parties a term and loads of private parties. Given the size of the college these usually include everyone though so aren't really private parties.

Social Events

A ball every three years with the works included, that means free food, alcohol, breakfast, bands and activities. The tickets are steep so that's fair enough. It has its own website which bodes well. The musical programme is pretty varied and a bit different but don't worry, cheese is a staple diet so you won't miss out.

Societies

A little bit of everything is available but sports clubs are particularly strong and organise many social activities.

Major awards

None that we know of but sports would be a fair bet.

General accommodation

Pretty much everyone lives in college in the first year and if you want you can live in for all three years. Accommodation is on the main site so you don't have far to go for lectures. The atmosphere can be a little suffocating at times, as with many of the colleges at Oxford but you do get used to it. Making friends at other colleges is a good idea. The standard of the accommodation is good and the addition of two new halls blocks has made things even better. There used to be all you can eat breakfasts which were the daddy but sadly these are no longer on offer. Sources suggest that a new chef has increased the all round food quality though so that might make up for it, at least in part.

Sporting facilities

Close by and good. Traditional sports are all strong. The proximity to the river really shouldn't matter, as no college is that far away, but it does, and Oriel's rowers are among the strongest.

Libraries

The library is well stocked. The only thing that makes it different from all the others is the reading room. This pretty stunning and actually makes you work harder. (We reckon anyway)

Computing facilities

There are enough machines to go around in the two computer rooms. They were new in 2001. There are permanent and a part-time staff to deal with any IT worries or problems. This is good for such a small college.

Student Welfare

Although there seems to be adequate medical services, the counselling set-up is not as strong as at other colleges. There is an excellent service run by the main university union though, and college tutors are usually good at handling welfare problems. Some good bursaries that are worth investigating and the library operates a long term loan scheme that essentially means you don't really need to buy many books.
