Date of foundation

Campus publications

A weekly newssheet available in lavatories. Light on Nobel prize winning literature but heavy on who snogged whom. Like Brasenose, Mansfield has a strong tradition in providing journalists for university publications.

Famous Alumni

Von Trott - Tried to kill Hitler

Bars

The Black Bottle bar is quiet during the week but really kicks off at weekends and is the scene of much drinking and debauchery. The college has a high foreign student poulation and this has a strong influence on the social scene, worth bearing in mind when you apply.

Major Functions

Late night functions two or three times a term and a good live music scene. Also plenty of cocktail parties and jazz evenings. Ra ra rating 9/10 then.

Social Events

Various black tie functions crop up from time to time but the number of students means that big events are limited.

Percentage of first years in halls

General accommodation

There are three types of accommodation provided. Single rooms in college, accommodation in The Dale Building and college owned houses. Socially the best bet for first years is to live in college, after this you may well want to move out into the city to avoid the claustrophobic atmosphere.

Local area

The city of Oxford is beautiful, it's as simple as that. Even the addition of a few 60's monstrosities can't dampen the image that you are in a special place. Aside from the architecture there are some great places to shop and the combined student population is pretty high so there are plenty of student friendly places. There are pubs galore but hunt out the gems from the touristy crap. Start with The Purple Turtle for night spots, try the traditional student haunts of Parkend and Fifth Avenue. Like a pertner forced upon you against your will by insistent parents you will eventually grow to love and depend on them. Hardened clubbers will have to make the hour's train ride to London. 60 000 students has given all of Oxford's club DJ's the idea that nothing but cheese will do. Po Na Na is a favourite and does manage to raise itself occasionally. As a general rule drunkeness is the best way to appreciate the clubs in Oxford. For food you really should try the Mongolian Wok if you want to go out for a meal that just has that edge - everyone knows the Wok.

Given that most of the colleges have fairly limited social facilities for late nights, the local area is all there is for real night owls. You might well get bored quite quickly. If so then don't despair as London is not far and very accesible by both train and an excellent coach service called the Oxford Tube. It's inexpensive and convenient.

Sporting facilities

Facilities are shared with Merton college and are not bad.
