Magdalene's bar is one of the best Cambridge college bars. It is a real focal point for the students of the college, which has a high sense of cameraderie due to its small size.
In the summer, the College bar is usually packed, as Magdalene has more river frontage than any other college.
Magdalene's biennial ball is one of the best at Cambridge. Strictly white tie, it is a fantastic occasion that cannot be missed. Many of the societies also hold formal events at the college.
During the year, the bar holds the occasional theme night and the end of term 'bops' certainly take the pressure off.
The standard of accommodation at Magdalene is generally very good, and the college is able to house all of its undergraduates as well as many of its graduate students. There are a range of different rooms, from fantastic oak-beamed attic rooms to what Cambridge call "modern sets". These 'sets' are basically a large room that is partitioned to look like a bedroom and study. Another great thing about Magdalene is that there are no shared rooms.
In college, many of the rooms arranged in groups of 6 or 7 around a staircase, which would include 4 undergraduate rooms, a postgraduate room, a resident fellow's (tutor) room, and maybe a non-resident fellow's teaching room. It feels very much like a boarding school.
There are, however, two problems with Magdalene's accommodation. First, due to the age of the building, it does not have good disabled access - although there are several disabled rooms on the ground floor. Secondly, there is very little accommodation suitable for married graduate students.
Due to the age of the college many of the buildings do not have good disabled access, and this is unlikely to change due to planning regulations. However, there is disabled accommodation on the ground floor and the college will make it as easy as possible for disable students.
The College has quite a large range of sports facilities and the sports teams tend to do well in the inter-collegiate cups throughout the year. The playing fields nearby are shared with St. John's and the boathouse is shared with Queen's College. The college also has a gym, squash courts, fives courts, and a number of punts moored on college grounds! Magdalene students also play for the university teams. In short, you will be to play virtually any sport somewhere at Cambridge.
There are three very good libraries, and we are told that there are over 25,000 in the main one. We had a look, and decided just to take this number on trust...we certainly weren't going to count them all! Unlike many universities, the libraries here really do make you want to work. They have such a great atmosphere.
Magdalene is one of the few colleges to be completely networked. This means that if you have your own computer you can get e-mail and internet access in your room. The college charge around £25.00 per term for this service, but it is well worth it, as there are no subsequent call charges. The college also has a computer suite that is open 24 hours a day.
