Campus publications

Union News

Rather surprisingly this publication contains news about the union. It is published 3 times a term and is best known for it's handling of union politics and activities.

1822

A satirical magazine that comes out 4 times a term. If you are witty, or at least think you are, then get involved. It's a good platform for all those jokes and jibes you think up but never get around to using.

Absolutely Campus

The union's gay publication. We find it quite bizarre that an institution so small can have three publications including a gay magazine. If they're all good and well-read then fair play to them.

Bars

There are two bars, both of them being in the main SU building. The first is the main bar which is very friendly. The thing that marks out Lampeter is that staff use it aswell. Extra guilt for not going to lectures then. The second bar is in the extension. This was added quite recently and allows the union to put on more ambitious functions. Food wise Dewi's, also in the union building, is the place to go.

Major Functions

The big thing at Lampeter is live music. Tuesday nights are when it all happens. Other than that there are functions three times a week. These are generally of the cheesy debauched variety.

Social Events

There are three major balls every year.

Societies

Being Wales it is hardly surprising that Rugby is popular. Apparently around a quarter of those at Lampeter are involved with the rugby teams.

Along with rugby there is a range of clubs and societies to cater for most tastes including a Masquerade society and a Pagan society.

Major awards

With so few students, it is difficult to win many sports awards. However, there's no lack of student involvement.

General accommodation

Accommodation is a mixed bag of fully catered halls, self- catered-flats and self catered blocks. There is a pay-as- you-eat system in some halls. The newer accommodation is quite pretty but there is plenty of 60's style stuff that makes you wonder why. If you like your housing old and charming then go for Burgess Hall and the St David's Building. They are quite typical of the local style but bear in mind the disadvantages of older buildings. The local area is pleasant and friendly. You should have little difficulty finding a place to live after the first year. Most houses will be close to campus. The union is quite helpful with this anyway though.

Local area

Lampeter is set in the beautiful Teifi Valley. The scenery is absolutely stunning and this is what attracts many students. If you're in to countryside and outdoor pursuits then this is the place for you. The town itself is pretty and has a few small shops. There has been an educational establishment in Lampeter for ages so the locals have accepted students as part of the community, unlike some other Welsh Universities. In terms of things to do it is very much limited to pubs, of which there are quite a few and most are very nice. The Ivy Bush and The Cwmanne Tavern are the top picks, the latter having some great live music. Avoid the dodgy converted cowshed just past the rugby field The Quarry. It can get a bit like a cross between American Werewolf in London Twin Peaks. Welsh is quite well spoken locally and learning a couple of simple phrases would be a good way to get settle in. The nearest big towns are Carmarthen and Aberystwth. Cardiff is a £10 coach ride away. A car is a useful and will really increase your range. This can be really important as Lampeter can get a bit claustrophobic at times. After a heavy night on the lash the students' grease of choice comes from the Cafe on Town (used to be the Newbridge).

Parking

Permit based, free and there's plenty of it. That's not something I get to write very often.

Banking

Nothing on campus.

Disabled facilities

There are specially adapted facilities in some halls for disabled students. Access around campus is not good though. There is a fair bit of work still to be done as many of the buildings are quite old and need ramps. There are decent facilities for the hearing impaired.

University shops

There is a shop in the main students' union building selling stationery and groceries.

Bookshops

There is a uni bookshop on campus

Sporting facilities

There are squash and tennis courts, a pool and gym. There is also a sports hall and a croquet lawn. The big thing sports wise is the mountains though. Paradise for anyone who likes to beast themselves in the cold.

Transport policy

None, bring a car if you can.

Green Spaces

This section would be better titled 'built up areas.' They are far more difficult to find!

Libraries

There are two libraries. Founder's has all the historical books and stuff you can't borrow. The Main library has everything else. Between them they have a sizeable 230 000 volumes, but students complain that the facilities are too few. They also have rubbish opening hours.

Computing facilities

There are 200 machines with 24/7 public access and all halls are networked up so you can bring your own machine. It's a decent idea to bring your own equipment including a printer if possible as demand can be pretty high at peak times.

Student Welfare

The welfare set-up is pretty much entirely SU-run. They do a decent job though. Medical facilities are in town.
