The Sarky Cutt
A monthly newspaper dedicated to providing students with a vehicle for expression and writing experience. Most articles cover student news and current affairs. Local issues are sometimes covered but it is difficult to make this wholly relevant given the disparity of sites. The paper is quite well read and is available everywhere.
Meantime
This is pretty much a customer magazine for Greenwich giving an idea of things going on like reserach and stuff. It's pretty useful if you are applying so get them to send you a copy.

Greenwich is split into 3 different sites, Greenwich, Avery Hill and Medway. This covers quite a large area so socially, it's quite disparate. Generally students at Medway keep themselves to themselves whereas those at the other sites have a better coordination of activities and tend to see more of each other.
Each site has a bar with TV screens (which reguarly show sports), pool tables, arcade/fruit machines and a Jukebox. There is a decent sized SU bar at Avery Hill and the bar at Maritime Greenwich receives plenty of attention. There is a bar in the Sparrow's Farm sports centre at the Avery Hill site, which is also run by the Students' Union. On the whole there's nothing exactly sparkling socially but they have places to sit and sell alcohol, you're big and ugly enough now to make something out of that aren't you?
There is a bit of a lack of major functions at Greenwich. At the moment the only major one is Dizzy on Friday nights at the Avery Hill site which is a cheese based party night popular with all. Other less regular events include "The Stock Exchange Drinking Experience" at Bar Latitude, in Greenwich, where the bar prices fluctuate according to demand, and are displayed on screens around the bar. This usually seems to entail putting up all the prices and selling dusty stocks of Drambuie for 30p a go.
Given the proximity to London most students will go there on Saturday nights for stimulation. This is easily accessible for those at Greenwich but for those in Medway it's too far. The sports centre bar at Avery Hill holds a sports night on Tuesdays which is well attended.
The annual summer ball has taken place at Alexandra Palace before and usually has a different location each year. It includes the usual summer ball elements such as funfair rides, entertainers and ruinous drunkeness.
The Ski and Snowboard club are very strong and have an excellent racing track record. The snowboard team are national champions. Student Participation, which deals with all charitable concerns is also well organised and highly active.
The University of Greenwich Design and Technology Centre has been chosen as the National Centre of Excellence for D&T teaching for 2002. There's also the Queens Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education to boast about.
In November 2001, the Fire Safety Engineering Group at the University of Greenwich won the top award at the coveted British Computer Society (BCS) IT Awards in recognition of their EXODUS suite evacuation software.

There is a range of accommodation that differs greatly from site to site. Maritime Greenwich, the university's main campus and focus for activity is pretty stunning. The uni occupies some of the buildings in a world heritage site with loads of fine architecture. Some of the most expensive but also most impressive accommodation is to found in the McMillan Student village (completed in 2004), just a short walk from the Greenwich campus there is a selection of study bedrooms and studio appartments, all of the rooms have network at internet access. Sadly their newness and location is reflected in the staggering price of £100 per week or £133 for a self contained studio flat!(Binnie Court, Cutty Sark and Devonport House offer cheaper and nice places to live and all all reasonably close to the Greenwich campus) All the halls are self-catered.
Avery Hill has student flats with between 4 and 9 sharing. Around half of these rooms are en-suite. You might be better off opting for a more expensive option of en-suite if that sort of thing bothers you. Medway has its own halls which are pretty much new and en-suite. It seems unfortunate that all the traditional, corridor-style halls have been got rid of as these provide the most sociable environment. Flats are OK but don't give the best uni experience. Having said that everyone is in the same boat as this is the only option so it shouldn't be a problem. When looking for something in the local area there is plenty of choice. Eltham and Charlton are OK, Woolwich and Plumstead are passable, Blackheath is very pleasant but you will pay the premium. Avoid Thamesmead unless you are a gangster with a sizeable operation and plenty of loyal heavies. Meday is quite countryfied and quiet, great for some, death for others. If you are applying for or end up going to Greenwich through clearing, as many do, make sure you take some time to find out which site you will be at, it makes a big difference and is well worth half an hour of your time and a quick call to the university or Students' Union. They also provide a decent accommodation service which can draw up contracts between landlords and students and is quite helpful when looking for accommodation.
Hmmm tough one this. Avery Hill has no real community so students tend to stick to the campus and SU bars. Maritime Greenwich is a bit more lively, there is a fantasic Market every Sunday that is very popular, selling clothes and 'nice' junk. Numerous cafes and restaurants provide a varied range of food and Weatherspoons attracts a lot of attention due to its prices. Other top pubs are The Gypsy Moth, The Trafalgar and St Christophers Inn. The union is quite competitive with the local area and refuses to roll over and die in the face of competition from London. Don't expect greatness though.
Apparently The Venue at New Cross is a popular venue for late night entertainment. Medway is pretty nice and has a few decent pubs and bars, as well as nightclubs such as Zens and Amadeus, but these won't satisfy the hardened clubber.
Rather surprising parking is both allowed and possible at all sites bar Greenwich, where it's just not worth it. Many students do bring cars and these can be an advantage if you want to escape East London's gritty reality. Permits are issued for free.
There is a Barclays at Avery Hill and plenty of local branches of other banks.
Many of the buildings are historic and can be difficult to adapt but there is a disability coordinator and 90% of lecture theatres have disabled access now. There is specialist tuition for students with specific learning disabilities, such as course material in Braille.
There are shops at each site selling the usual items such as groceries and stationery. They also operate a video hire service. Good idea.
Each campus has its own bookshop run by the university. Prices are competitive and they are supplied with reading lists in advance so getting the text you need should never be a problem.
Most facilities are centred around the Avery Hill site where the Sparrow's Farm sports centre (including a gym) is located. There are also plenty of pitches for field sports here.
There is a minibus service that shuttles students between sites.
The Avery Hill site is split into teaching and living sites and these are separated by a park. The Greenwich site is next to the rather lovely Greenwich Park. Medway is proper country Kent and is very pleasant. Greenwich town centre is being redeveloped and is getting smarter.
The main library is at Greenwich, it is pretty standard-lots of books and computer facilities. There are smaller collections at all the sites.
There are computers in libraries and independent computer labs. There are also facilities in accommodation blocks and the newest halls are linked to the university network for internet access.
On paper the health and welfare service seems great. Coucelling and general health are well well provided for, plus all the usual aid with academic and finacial promlems is available.
