Bars:
Number of Bars: One (1)

The SOAS bar is good for a quiet, relaxed drink during the day, but at night it is best not to bother going as it closes at 8:30pm. In some places it needs a bit of decoration, but if you want a quick drink or a warm coffee, and to mix with the variety of cultures at SOAS, then it is an ideal place to go.

The bar has gained a reputation for being soft on drugs. Although efforts have been made to sort this out with CCTV and under cover police it is still pretty much a haven for those who prefer their pleasures on the illegal side. The Students' Union wants to take the bar over though and if this happens the anti-drugs policy will get much tighter as they certainly cannot afford the licensing hassle. Opening times should change for the better under SU reign.

Functions:
There are usually Friday night functions every other week in the SOAS bar. However, most of SOAS students socialise at ULU, where there are regular organised functions. Despite this, SOAS have attracted some smaller bands recently, including Wild Children, a Chinese band and Aba Shanty, a reggae band.
Major Social Events:
Towards the end of March is the SOAS Ball, which is always good fun. Due to the relatively small size of SOAS, it is possible to know quite a few people at the Ball.

The Fresher's night is called BODEGA. Although very socialable and great fun, it tends to be a more sober experience than many of the University of London Fresher events.

Clubs & Societies:
Due to the high ethnic minority population of SOAS (currently >60%), the most popular societies are those linked to a particular ethnic group. For example, the Black and Proud Society and the Palastinian Society are two of the largest. There is also an Arab Poetry Society.
